Young achievers are honoured.....

OUTWARD bound students from schools across the Dales were presented with prestigious awards in Bakewell.

The adventurous pupils were presented with Peak and Duke of Edinburgh Awards at a ceremony at the Medway Centre, by the county councils education cabinet member, Alan Charles.

Friends and relatives saw more than 50 young achievers pick up their awards in the New Street building.

The Peak Awards are open to children as young as 11, while the Duke of Edinburgh scheme caters for 14 to 25 year-olds in three levels, bronze, silver and gold. But both award projects are designed to help teenagers build confidence and independence.

Four pupils from the Dales landed the prestigious D of E gold award. Katherine Hyde and Rita Lai of St Elphins School in Darley Dale along with Joanna Buckingham and Claire Shimwell from Bakewells Lady Manners School were presented with the top accolade.

Claire Ball and Heidi Russell from Lady Manners gained silver awards with Charlotte Brown and Clare Jackson from St Elphins. Tom Duffell, Sarah Lovatt, Emma Schwindt, Simon Wood and Lisa Woodroffe from the Parwich Duke of Edinburgh Unit got the bronze award.

Kate Lockwood from Highfields School in Matlock was a bronze achiever, along with Sally Hammerton, Catherine Johnson, William Johnson, Clare Jones, Rosanna Keegan and Hannah Wiles from the Hope Valley Duke of Edinburgh Unit.

Lady Manners also boasted the following bronze award achievers; Sally Adlen, Nicholas Beasley, David Blagden, Sam Churchill, Jonathan Cole, Lauren Crawford, Eleanor Duckham, Benjamin Gaunt, Richard Gray, John Griffiths, Samantha Johnston, Leanne Matthews, Charles Maybury, Kyla Owen, Michael Rhodes, Alexandra Rusby, Jennifer Saul, Justine Sharples, Benjamin Sizer, Christopher Turner, Ashley Wharton, Andrew Wheatcroft and David Wright. Charlotte Brown and Amy Daniel from St Elphins School Darley Dale also achieved bronze awards.
