ANGRY motorists in the Dales were hit by highways hell when a major roadworks scheme got underway on the A6.

At the peak of the problems last Friday, traffic queued all the way from Matlock to St Elphin's School, in Darley Dale.

The widespread disruption was caused by roadworks which were being carried out in Darley Dale by a contractor on behalf of BT.

Furious motorist Tracey Worth, speaking last Friday afternoon, said: "The queues are ridiculous. I have just come from Buxton to Matlock and cars were stationary in the other direction right from St Elphin's to the Matlock signpost.

"I will have to find an alternative route back to Buxton because I'm not prepared to queue for hours."

After hearing of the shambles on Friday, Derbyshire County Council ordered the contractors to operate the traffic lights manually to reduce queues when the works restarted on Monday.

A county council spokesman said: "We insisted that they did not work at traffic sensitive times. They had to work in the 9.30am to 3.30pm slot to prevent big tail backs during busy times."
