Grounds ...

The fishpond, below, could be seen when looking out of the dining hall windows. In early 1973 I can remember asking Maud if I could go to the pet shop in Matlock and purchase some fish for the pond out of my own pocket. Needless to say she agreed and I can remember buying some goldfish and golden orfe, together with some fish food. The water in the pond wasn’t clear at that time – unlike the photo below – so the fish were rarely seen, although they did come up for food. As I left school in July that year I have no idea what happened to the pond after that time and can only assume the fish died over time.

Above: As far as we can establish, this photo was taken in the Spring of 2005 before the school closed down. The fountain with 3 dolphins on, was sold at the auction in April 2005. Photo: Angela Mellor (died August 2017)
